The Logic in Language

Whether we’re conscious of it or not, there is logic in language.  By logic, I mean the coherent connection of ideas in a proposition.  Consider this example, “Encircle the letter T, if the statement is true and encircle F, if it is false.”[1]  At a cursory glance, the meaning of this statement is clear.  But in careful analysis, it turns out that its meaning is logically incoherent, or there is logical inconsistency of its meaning.

The statement above is a complex one consisting of two hypothetical statements (if-then phrase) but the main proposition is conjunctive –that is, two hypothetical statements are connected by the word “and”.  To paraphrase it, the proposition will go as follows, “If the statement is true, then encircle the letter T and if it is false, then encircle F.”

As mentioned above the meaning of the statement is clear enough.  But if you consider the word and connecting the first hypothetical proposition and the second one, its meaning will become incoherent because the truth-value of the former (first hypothetical) does not coincide with the latter (the second hypothetical).  To further our consideration particularly on the word and, it is construed that the same statement is presumed to be true and false at the same time, which is against the laws of any person of logical mind.  This is the main reason why that statement is logically incoherent or logically inconsistent.  It is construing that each given item (statement) in that part of exam can be true and false.

In an actual exam, a student can encircle T and F in the same given item.  For example,

                  T             F             1.  The sun rises at 6:00 am.

A student can encircle T and F at the same time, and he/she is correct by virtue of the given instruction since it goes, “Encircle T, if the statement is true and encircle F, it is false.”  This is funny! But it could happen if he/she thinks that the given item is true and false.  But at the outset, the instruction (of this exam) becomes even funnier because of its logical inconsistency.

I think the best way to state it is this way, “Encircle the letter T, if the statement is true, or encircle F, if it is false.”  This time we have a disjunctive proposition –a disjunctive proposition offers us an alternation, meaning “If the statement is true, then choose T, or it is false, then choose F.”  The word “or” warrants us that the same statement is not or cannot be true and false at the same time.  In the actual exam, a student is only to choose T or F, not T and F.

[1] This line is culled from a test paper as a given instruction for a “true or false” type of the exam.

True it is unconstitutional because it destroyed or damaged our government.

    Is Anti-Terror Law unconstitutional? True.
I get why the officials needed this law because of their safety. But what about those innocent people who will be affected? The people who the government thinks the are a suspect or a threat to them?

Anti-terror law shouldn't be approved because we people need to speak our voices and be heard our opinions too.

  3. Logic in language is the coherent connection of ideas in a proposition. Some statements are logically inconsistent of its meaning. Like “Encircle the letter T, if the statement is true and encircle F, if it is false.” The word and...it is construed that the same statement is presumed to be true and false at the same time, which is against the laws of any person of logical mind. It is construing that each given item (statement) in that part of exam can be true and false. A student can encircle T and F at the same time, and he/she is correct by virtue of the given instruction since it goes, “Encircle T, if the statement is true and encircle F, it is false.” The best way to state it is this way, “Encircle the letter T, if the statement is true, or encircle F, if it is false.” This time we have a disjunctive proposition –a disjunctive proposition offers us an alternation, meaning “If the statement is true, then choose T, or it is false, then choose F.” The word “or” warrants us that the same statement is not or cannot be true and false at the same time.

As I read this essay I can say that there is logic in language. It is very important to use the proper word so its meaning won't be logically incoherent. We must see to it that the statement is clear enough with the proper use of words so as not to confuse the reader. “Encircle the letter T, if the statement is true and encircle F, if it is false.” In this statement if read carefully you can answer true and false at the same time, this is logically incoherent. This other statement-“Encircle the letter T, if the statement is true, or encircle F, if it is false.” is clearly stated in a way that you have to chose wether your answer will be true or false. The word “or” warrants us that the same statement is not or cannot be true and false at the same time. In this way the instruction is very clear to the reader and is logically coherent. Logic in language is therefore important where in the use of reasoning is consistent to come to that conclusion, and everything makes sense.

  4. The main theme of this article is to point out the logical point of inconsistency in the use of proposition. There is logic i language , in the coherent connection of ideas in the proposition. It may be clear in the primitive glance what is the meaning of the proposition, but the fact is, it is logically incoherent. It is seen in the given example of the author on this article, "Encircle the letter T if it is true and encircle letter F if it is false". The meaning is clear in just a glance, but with careful analysis it has a logical inconsistency. The statement is composed of two hypothetical proposition and connected by conjunctive proposition. The hypothetical proposition "if" is connected by the conjunctive proposition by the word "and" which makes it logically incoherent because of the word "and". Using the disjunctive proposition it gives us a vivid and coherent connection of ideas by using the word "or" instead of the word "and". The word "or" indicates alternation or opposition that the statement cannot be true or false.

This must be analyse critically to avoid misconceptions and misinterpretations. Not just only analyse but to choose the primed proposition that makes up the statement clear as well as it is logically coherent on its meaning. Proper construction of the statement with proposition that helps the statement links to its true meaning. I personally don't have the knowledge about logic before, but with this subject it molds my consciousness about logic. Studying logic helps people not into confusion but to a greater ideas that is wired through your critical thinking skills.

There is logic in Language, like the example in this article " Encircle the letter T, if the statement is true and encircle F, if it is false." at first glance it is literally correct. but when it undergoes proper analysis you will see that this given statement is logically wrong or incoherent. The two propositions are both hypothetical because of (if-then) and it is connected with the conjunctive sign (and). The two propositions become conjunctive because it is already connected through the word (and). Now let us analyze why this example is logically wrong or incoherent? because if you will read the example carefully the statement sounds like the True and False are both correct. That is why this article gives a clarification on how to choose or to make a correct statement.

Inorder to make a clear and coherent statement, we must use the proper word to make a correct and accurate statement. This example from the article is the correct statement if the teacher or the professor will give an exam to his student." Encircle the letter T, if the statement is true, OR encircle F, if it is false". The word (or) is a disjunctive sign that helps the reader or the examiner to easily identify the correct answer because of the correct word that has been used in the statement.

    Comment:

This article makes the statement clearer and easier to understand especially if the statement is logically arranged. In reading or analysing a proposition we must be careful always in reading on this to avoid mistake or wrong understanding. Words are very playful if you do not give enough time to understand this. That is why it is important to know how to identify the signs and clues in a proposition. With this we can easily understand the statement and give the accurate at the same time. Thank you.

Logic in a language is rational with the accord to the propositions. logic in the language is knowledge. Since language is the primary medium in our daily activities with its liabilities. If you read this example of the preposition "encircle the letter T, if the statement is true and encircle F, if it is false". By reading this you would not expect that there is something wrong with the statement being given. When you put proper analysis on it you will see that it is coherent or logically wrong. Which I had experienced with my past teachers in elementary and in High School. The word (or) is a disjunctive sign that helps the reader or the examiner to easily identify the correct answer because of the correct word that has been used in the statement.
This article is didactic that would help you understand a certain statement logically. It needs further examination to have acceptable propositions. If you say or use "and" it could happen that he/she would choose both "T" and "F". I definitely agree that it is best to use "or" as a disjunctive instead of using "and". Disjunctive sets two or more expressions in opposition to each other.

There is Logic in language. The coherent of connection of ideas or thoughts must be carefully examined. In this example, “Encircle the letter T, if the statement is true and encircle F, it is false.” The incoherence of ideas occurs. First, the statement is a hypothetical form and hypothetical propositions are conditional statements which use the “if-then” phrase. Second, the statement uses the word “and” which can be presumed to be true and false at the same time. Thus, this statement is illogically inconsistent and against the laws of logical mind. However, it is best to use “or” instead of “and” in this statement. Since, “or” is a disjunctive form of propositions indicating alteration or opposition of terms in the statement.
In my side, it is necessary to be careful in using words in a statement. It must be well examined and coherence in every ideas or thoughts. As well as, the analytical thinking must be applied to check its validity or accuracy of the statement. In the given example, it is good to analyze it and reconstruct into this form, “Encircle the letter T, if the statement is true, or encircle F, it is false.” The statement becomes clear and consistent. Hence, by the word “or” indicates choices and the statement cannot be true and false at the same time.

  8. Absolutely there is logic in language. Like the example given in this article, “Encircle the letter T, if the statement is true and encircle F, if it is false.” If you read this statement you would not expect that there is something wrong with the statement. But when you analyze it, you will see the error which is ‘against the law of any person of logical mind’. Going straight to the point, what made the statement incorrect is, it uses the hypothetical connective “and” rather than the logical disjunction “or”, which some of my past teachers in elementary and high school most often used, and if I only know that the statement is logically incoherent or logically inconsistent then I would have been perfect in the exam. Nevertheless, this idea of Mr. Roel Jumawan is a charm of originality in this logical work that no competent reader can fail to appreciate, and next time I will use this idea if it appears in the actual exam again so that I could get a perfect score. I fully concur that this idea is the preeminent example and that it is good to use “or” in a statement if you are to choose instead of using “and”.

  9. Definitely there is language in logic. Just like the given example in this article. Encircle the letter T, if the statement is true and encircle F, if it is false. If you read this statement you could not notice that there is something wrong with that statement. At a cursory glance, the meaning of this statement is clear. But in careful analysis, it turns out that its meaning is logically incoherent. Or there is logical inconsistency of its meaning. If you are analyzing this you will see the error. Which is against the law of any person of logical mind. Since the statement is incorrect, it uses the hypothetical connectives “and” in place of the logical disjunctive “or” which is a lot of teachers were using during the exam. If I knew it was wrong, I would have answered everything correctly. Today I just found out that the statement was wrong.

  11. It is very interesting to know that even in a simple sentence or in a given instruction by teacher during an exam could have a logical explanation and a logical reasoning. I believed that there is logic in Language, like the example in this article " Encircle the letter T, if the statement is true and encircle F, if it is false." at first glance it is literally correct. but when it undergoes proper analysis you will see that this given statement is logically wrong or incoherent. 12. The significant point in the article is the connections of logic in language. One good example is the logical inconsistency of its meaning, like the instruction “Encircle the letter T, if the statement is true and encircle F, if the statement is false." The word and is interpreted to mean that the same statement is believed to be true and false at the same time. This means that every item statement in this part of the exam can be right and wrong. A student can circle T and F at the same time, and he / she is right on the instruction given as he /she says “Circle T if the statement is true and circle F if it is false. The best way to put it is "Circle the letter T if the statement is true or circle F if it is false." This may be a common mistake especially students and even professionals. That is why the use of common sense sometimes is very useful. Logic could be a useful tool if you know hot to use it and limit it of course for some times. Hence Logic is everywhere you only need to be aware of it.

The Article was helpful in giving information, especially in making instructions and dealing with common mistake. It made my critical thinking more critical and deeper. The use of “ Common Sense” may also be applied if you lack logic, but thanks to the article it help me a lot and attain another knowledge on it.

Logic is always with us. Are we aware? No, we aren’t. Also, in language there is logic. In this article, it tackles about the logical incoherency of the common statement “Encircle the letter T, if the statement is true and encircle F, if it is false” that most have made a mistake in giving instructions and will make if not to be corrected. Doing careful analyses of the statements, the connection between the idea and the statement being delivered in a particular activity has a possibility to make the logical incoherency of the language be structured coherently.

Everytime in examinations or quizzes, this error is unrecognized by most. A single word “and” could create incoherency. To normal readers, the statement is no error at all. Why could be such “and” be argued? We could just write T if the statement is true and F if the statement is false. Nothing’s wrong right? This questions are possible to those who are unaware of the case and will create misconceptions. And I could have been perfect in all “true or false” examinations if only I knew about this.

  14. This article's major subject is to draw attention to the logical flaw in the use of propositions. Language contains logic in the coherent way that ideas are connected in a statement. Although the meaning of the proposition may appear obvious at first look, it is actually illogical. The author of this page provides the following example: "Encircle the letter T if it is true and encircle the letter F if it is false." Even if the meaning is obvious at first glance, further examination reveals a logical contradiction. The sentence is made up of two speculative propositions joined together by conjunctive propositions. The hypothetical statement "if" is related to the It is a conjunctive proposition with the word "and," which renders it logically nonsensical. By utilizing the word "or" instead of the word "and," the disjunctive proposition provides us with a clear and compelling relationship between the notions. The conjunction "or" denotes contrast or alternation, indicating that the proposition cannot be both true and untrue. To prevent misunderstandings and misinterpretations, this needs to be closely examined. In addition to analyzing, you should also pick a primed proposition that clarifies the statement's meaning and ensures that it is logically coherent. Using the right propositions to form your statements can help them connect to their underlying meaning. I didn't previously have any knowledge of logic, but this subject has changed the way I think about it. Studying logic directs people toward higher ideas that are wired through your critical thinking abilities rather than confusion.

  15. Are we not aware enough to understand that logic is something we constantly encounter? Since logic is present in language as well as everything else around us, it follows that logic must permeate everything around us. The terms "True" and "False," which are opposites and mutually exclusive, appear to be so simple and clear. In reality, however, we might suppress the hazy area between the two in much, if not all, of our knowledge. This article discusses the common instruction, "Encircle the letter T, if the statement is true, and encircle F, if it is false," which most people have misunderstood and will continue to misunderstand if it is not corrected. By carefully examining the statements, it is possible to make the logical incoherency of the language be structured coherently by establishing the relationship between the idea and the statement being delivered in a specific activity.

The majority of the time, this error goes unobserved during examinations. The word "and" alone could lead to confusion. Not discriminate against other people, but the statement is completely incomprehensible to the average reader. Even teachers who are creating the exams are not fully aware of this matter because this question will cause misunderstandings among those who are unaware of the circumstances. And I could have aced every "true or false" test if I had known about this.

  16. This article is very useful so that we can know what is logic in language and to review some mistakes that is written in the instructions, stories or etc. Logic is the means of thinking right. Language is the dress of thought. It is essentially thought that shapes the language or shapes the language. Thoughts must be expressed in language, because if we do not express our thoughts in language, we will not be able to analyze them logically.
just like this example “Encircle the letter T, if the statement is true and encircle F, if it is false” this is a common mistake that we didn't consider in times when we our teacher is giving a test. Once we saw that if the statement is true so encircle T and if it is not (false) encircle F we answer the question or statement directly without observing the "and" in the instruction. If you say "and" it means you are proposing the two subject or choosing the two answers, while "or" either you choose between the two. that is the common problem of some teacher in my past grade school they used "and" than "or" because that is their usual in constructing an instructions but for me it is not because it is not proper. we need to correct some errors so that there will be no ungrammatical instructions that will affect to some students learning. I hope that this article will give awareness to all teachers and students

  17. There is logic in language and it is very important to read and analyze carefully a proposition in order to avoid mistakes in understanding. Just like the term "true and false" I thought that this is clear and correct because in my elementary, high school, and senior high school days if we had a test these is the instructions that the teacher will give us “Encircle the letter T, if the statement is true and encircle F, if it is false.” and they are not aware of this and also I was shocked and confused that this is wrong and the correct statement is "True or False" and because of this I have learned that there is always logic in language and we need to read and analyze statement to avoid mistakes. Thank you. :)

  19. There is indeed logic in language. Like the example given by the blogger, “Encircle the letter T, if the statement is true and encircle F, if it is false.” If we analyze it very well, we could see that the statement is inconsistent especially in its meaning. The truth-value of the first hypothetical contradicts with the second hypothetical. It is not logical if the statement is understood that the same statement is taken to be true and false at the same time. The best thing to do is this way, “Encircle the letter T, if the statement is true or F if it is false.” At least we already have a proposition that offers an alternation. The disjunction “or” ensures that the same statement is neither true nor false at the same time.

It was clarified to me that what I used to receive as an instruction since elementary was illogical. I agree to the author’s point and indeed it has a point. Like in language, the correct usages of “prepositions” are important to make the statement right. The meaning of the sentence would be different if the used preposition is wrong; and so, logically, giving the right instruction could make the receivers give the correct answers.

  20. There is indeed a language in logic. Like in this given example “Encircle the letter T, if the statement is true and encircle F, if it is false.” At a cursory glance, the meaning of this statement is clear. But in careful analysis, it turns out that its meaning is logically incoherent, or there is logical inconsistency of its meaning. This example is a very interesting topic for many of us whether we can agree or disagree to the given example that is clearly a good sentence. Hence, if we can look at it in different angles we can now see that it is wrong. It is wrong in a sense that the used word is not what it must be in that sentence. Thus, when we consider that the word and connecting the first hypothetical proposition and the second one, its meaning will become incoherent.

As for me, we must learn to be clear in every statements we make because it might give confusion to many. We must be gentle on reading those instruction’s and look for the clues and sign that we can consider it as a very important structure of a statement. This essay has given explanation that was easy to understand by many.
